Vista del Mar (sea faces)
This is a serial of "sea faces" which I have made during my years living in Spain on the Costa Brava, which I already visited several times during my sailing ship trips.
All these paintings of "vista's" more or less are linked to the notorious "Tramuntana", a tempestuous storm which can show up very suddenly, sometimes for some hours but also can last a week with a wind strength between 8 and 15 or even up .
That is about 150 km/hour, the Tramuntana is well known at the Costa Brava and reaches from the French border until Pineda da Mar.
During the Tramuntana you can't be outside , garden seats and tables are flying in the air, even wild animals choose not to be outside. Fishermen ensure that the boats en themselves are docked in time.
There is also an advantage According to the Catalans, it has a purifying functioning by clearing the air, and indeed after a Tramuntana the air clears blue and you can't imagine anymore that a couple of hours ago a violent storm has raged.
By experiencing these Tramaunta's I understood also why the skys on the paintings of Dali often looks violent and the clouds are long shaped.
These are signs that there is a Tramuntana on arrival, during the storm the sky is beautifull coloured, unrealistic coloured.
These colours are made for surealistische paintings, if you take a photograph of the air it looks as if it's manipulated.
This decide me to make a serial paintings, my vision of the sea and live which always starts again.
That expresses the eggs on my paintings, and on many paintings you meet "Carmen", the goddess of the sea who controles everything the see brings us, from the fish to the "Tramuntana".
But Carmen also is warning us to do not destroy all this beautifulness, but to cherish and appreciate it, because whe are only boroing it.
As a thank and also to pleasing "Carmen" each year there is a festival called "Fiësta the Carmen".
“The earth and our own bodies, are made up mainly of water. Water is very essential to
our existance. Water is a symbol of creation and purification”.
